Cosmic Flying Saucer Review

We've owned the purple version of this toy for a year and my now 3 YO daughter still loves it. As a result, I thought it would be the perfect gift for one of her young friends. Unfortunately, the item we received from this supplier was defective.
I like to make sure that toys for young children are ready to go straight from the box, so when this item arrived I carefully unpackaged it and installed two AA batteries. I know from having a working version of this toy that it should light up and make noise (e.g., when the cockpit window is opened or closed, when the laser button on top of the ship is pressed and when the 3 internal cockpit buttons are pressed individually), but this one did not light up or make a peep. I was immediately concerned having read another reviewer's account of ordering 3 toys, none of which worked. Before deciding that the toy was defective I installed two new batteries to make sure I had fresh cells, despite the fact that I had just opened a new pack. No lights, no sounds, no luck.
While installing the batteries, I noticed that the toy I received was manufactured over 3 years ago, which seems like a long time on the shelf. The box it came in also looked as though it had seen more than its fair share of handling and re-taping. I'm disappointed to have received a defective item because I now have to rush out and purchase a much less unique toy from some giant toy stores, as the birthday party is tomorrow.
I rated the toy highly because it really is very cool if you can get your hands on a working version. I also highly recommend the Lift Off Rocket from the same group of toys. International Playthings Lift-Off Rocket
