The motor is in the tender so it is the tender that is pushing the engine. Even little children look at this as being odd and question why it is that way. Otherwise, the engine works fine and is a good value for normally around twelve dollars, but you would be better off with one of the numerous other Trackmaster trains. Note that Trackmaster trains are plastic and they use a hook to connect cars. This makes them incompatible with the wooden engines.
