Help me explain to my daughter why the colour of Upsy Daisy's face has changed. Shall I tell her that the people who make the doll think that white people like us won't buy anything with a dark face? Because historically dark faces belong to groups invaded, oppressed, or hated by people with light faces?
The people who made In the Night Garden were brave enough to go against the idea that white faces are all children should see. The toy manufacturers weren't. What makes it glaring is that the character already exists. So what if the research says pale faces sell better? That only makes sense if they are inventing a new character. They have changed a character we are already know and love, who we are already familiar with. We're buying the doll because our children love Upsy Daisy already! That is what makes the change so glaring.
So who is this change aimed at? People who haven't seen the show? Racist nans who have been told to buy an Upsy Daisy doll for a child's birthday but wouldn't if they find out she has a dark face?
It is one more drop in the pervasive drip drip drip of racism you experience if you have dark skin, even in my relatively enlightened country. It makes me wonder whose decision this was, and how much thought they put into it, and whether they thought of that car manufacturer's white photoshopping of black workers for their group photos as they did it.
If you're thinking I am making a fuss about nothing, imagine how puzzled you would be if you'd bought a Luke Skywalker figure back in the day and then found it had dark skin. Actually though - that would be worth a fortune now. But what if all Luke Skywalker toys had a dark face? Then the manufacturer would obviously be working to some political agenda. What is the difference?
