Thomas the Train: TrackMaster Talking Percy Review

Trackmaster Percy is a great little toy train. The build and paint quality is quite good, although I haven't had it long enough to adequately judge its durability. The sounds and voice that come with this toy are extremely well done. The volume level is ideal - not too loud that it pierces your ears and not too soft as to render it useless. The "toot! toot!" of the whistle is also very distinct and fun. As Percy chugs around, he'll mix in some phrases every so often that are recognizable and repeatable by an almost two year old. The tender (maroon car with the coal) houses the batteries (already included - how nice!) and is permanently attached to the engine (green) car.
Some details you may have missed from reading the product description:
- There is a sensor built into the rear axle (set of wheels) of the tender. It senses whether the tender is set down on a surface, and enables the wheels to go. If you are holding the train up off the ground and you push the button (yellow chimney stack on the green engine car), you'll only hear the sound and/or voice. Only when that sensor is pushed up will the wheels turn on as well.
- You cannot push this toy around. It's motorized only, and the drive wheels (rear set of the green engine car) do not spin freely even if you turn off the motor. Some of the other Trackmaster trains do allow you to push; be sure to read the product description carefully.

- Percy is slower than a non-talking Thomas that came with the Colin Surprise playset. Since I only have these two engines to compare, I would assume that speed varies due to weight (Percy is heavier with his attached tender) as well as perhaps battery condition (I have no idea how old those batteries that came pre-included with Percy are). Train speed comes into play when you have two or more trains sharing the same track.
Overall, this toy is well-made and lots of fun. Enjoy!
